The skincare conversation about sun protection focuses almost entirely on sunscreen — which SPF to use, how often to reapply, which formula doesn’t leave a white cast. The coverage that sun protection clothing provides is discussed less, partly because it belongs to a different product category and partly because the available options have historically been aesthetically compromised.

Beneunder’s UPF 100+ range changes the practical calculation.

The Reapplication Problem

Sunscreen works when applied correctly — at 2mg per square centimeter, which is approximately a teaspoon for the face and significantly more for the body. It works when reapplied every two hours or after sweating or swimming. The real-world performance of sunscreen is consistently below its rated performance because the application amount and reapplication frequency are below what the rating requires.

UPF clothing doesn’t have this problem. You put it on and it provides the rated protection for as long as you’re wearing it.

The Beneunder Difference

blocks at least 99% of UV radiation through the fabric. This rating holds after repeated washing, holds when the fabric is damp, and holds at any angle of sun exposure. Available at beneunder.com.

provides the same protection across the brim surface — covering face, ears, and neck. The wide brim specifically covers areas where sunscreen is most commonly missed or inadequately applied. Available at beneunder.com.

The Practical Integration

For the face: sunscreen still applies — clothing can’t cover the full face comfortably and sunscreen remains the practical choice for skin the clothing doesn’t reach.

For arms, shoulders, and body: UPF clothing removes the reapplication requirement entirely. The protection is reliable where the clothing covers.

For extended outdoor time: the combination of sunscreen on exposed skin and UPF clothing on covered areas provides better total protection than sunscreen alone, because the areas under clothing aren’t relying on correct application or timely reapplication.

This is why dermatologists recommend UPF clothing alongside sunscreen rather than as an alternative — the two approaches address different areas and different practical limitations.
