The dermatology community has been giving the same advice for thirty years: wear SPF every day, not just when you’re at the beach, not just in summer, every day. The advice is so consistently given and so consistently not followed that it’s worth examining why, and whether the reasons people don’t follow it hold up.

The Actual Reason People Skip It

The actual reason most people don’t apply SPF daily is that the products available for most of that thirty-year period were genuinely unpleasant to use. White cast. Greasy texture. Broke down makeup. Felt hot and heavy. These were not imagined problems — they were real characteristics of older mineral sunscreen formulations that made daily compliance difficult even for people who understood the importance.

What UV Damage Actually Does Over Time

UV radiation damages skin in two ways. UVB causes the burning visible as redness and peeling. UVA penetrates deeper, doesn’t cause burning in the short term, and is responsible for most of the collagen degradation, pigmentation changes, and structural skin changes associated with aging.

UVA penetrates glass. Your car windshield blocks UVB but not UVA. The left side of your face (the driver’s side in the US) shows measurably more UV aging than the right side in most people who drive regularly — this is documented in dermatological literature and the photos are striking.

UVA is present year-round. It doesn’t decrease significantly on cloudy days. The cumulative exposure across every day, commuting, sitting near windows, outdoor time, is what produces the visible skin changes over decades.

Why Sunscreen in Your Moisturiser Isn't Enough

Many moisturisers include SPF 15 or 20. These provide some protection. The problem: the amount of SPF product required to actually deliver the rated protection is significantly more than most people apply when using a moisturiser with SPF. The SPF rating is tested at 2mg per square centimeter of skin — most people applying a moisturiser use a fraction of this.
